The possibility of James escaping into the Black Hole was furthered, when James reappeared in the universe to help Fox escape Andross, although it is unknown whether this was a hallucination of Fox's or not. While reports labelled James as being killed in action, General Pepper and Peppy both knew that James was last seen near the Awesome Black Hole, which Andross accidentally created in one of his many experiments. Although Peppy was able to barely escape with his life, James was presumed dead.
However, when the team arrived, James and Peppy were betrayed by Pigma, and ambushed by a legion of Andross's secret forces. When the time came that the threat of Andross's return loomed over the galaxy, despite being believed dead due to his exile on the Planet Venom, Star Fox was sent to investigate.
James then went on to create the elite team known as Star Fox, with Peppy and Pigma. As a result, James was able to join the Cornerian Defense Force, few years later meeting an unknown woman and giving life to his son, Fox McCloud. James eventually joined, and graduated, the Cornerian Academy, alongside his best friends, Peppy Hare and Pigma Dengar. Born 43 years before the Lylat Wars, James McCloud was a natural-born ace pilot.
